In several Western countries may cross a new #kinderziekte , just now that we're struggling with the coronavirus. Children end up in hospital with severe flu complaints and inflammations around the heart. In the United Kingdom, patients have even succumbed to it. Also in the Netherlands two children have ended up in intensive care. Is it a new disease or are the children still infected with the coronavirus?

The disease, which appears to affect mainly children, came into view after doctors in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the United States saw an increase in the number of children admitted to hospitals. The children often suffered from severe abdominal, stomach and intestinal problems and a strong fever. Some had lung and heart problems and were hospitalized in intensive care. Some children have succumbed to it in the United Kingdom, and there are no known deaths in the other countries.

In total, more than a hundred cases have been reported, some fifteen of them in France, the French Health Minister Olivier Veran reported earlier this week. Dutch patients have been confirmed by child immunologist Taco Kuijpers of the Amsterdam Medical Center to NU.nl . His AMC colleague Job van Woensel, also professor of pediatric intensive care, told Medisch Contact earlier that they were two teenagers.
Coronavirus

It is a scare for parents and children, also because until now it has been assumed that children were not a risk group with regard to the coronavirus. The question is whether there is an existing disease, a new disease and whether there is a link to Covid-19.

Several experts point to corona, because some of the children were tested positively for the virus. However, this theory is negated because another group of children tested negative for the virus. It is possible that they had the coronatests failed or that they had had the virus before and there was a violent immune reaction.

The clinical picture of the affected children is diverse: they show symptoms of toxic shock syndrome (a bacterial infection) and Kawasaki's disease (inflammation in walls of blood vessels). Specifically, they suffer from fever, difficulty breathing, severe abdominal pain, rash and diarrhea. The British Health Service NHS warned this week:, Children who contact the doctor with such complaints should be treated as soon as possible.”

There is no medical evidence yet to substantiate the link to the coronavirus
