Save with free supermarket stamps?!
Save with free supermarket stamps?
I always think that's a little thing those free supermarket stamps. Are you really saving, or is it a trick from these supermarkets? I think there is and/and in most cases.
Example: The PLUS now has the following action “You receive a seal every 10 euro of messages. With 75 stamps you can return your full savings card and receive a free shopping package immediately.” The shopping package is worth 50 euros and contains a lot of good products also a voucher for free delivery (worth 6 euros) and a discount voucher for great days out. Now I don't know what this discount will mean, but you have to spend money again to get around 60 euros something free.
To summarize: You must first spend 750 euros in that store to receive 50 euros of free groceries.
If you are a regular customer of such a supermarket in the sense that you get the most groceries there, there is of course nothing wrong. You already did your groceries there so you just get your free seals without having to do anything extra. However, the danger is that if you go for a small message and you do not reach that 10 euro you may be tempted to buy something extra so that you will get that one seal or your groceries will end up at an amount of 46 euro so that you can throw something in the cart to 50 euros to tap at the checkout and get that one extra stamp. I think the supermarkets are betting on that. The goal of supermarkets is to bind (permanent) customers to themselves and perhaps more importantly attract new customers with this kind of savings.
I myself do not really have one regular supermarket. A preferred supermarket but if I'm very honest then I switch very easily when what I need in another supermarket is cheaper. So I always go for the cheapest price and the best offer. As a result, I can never actually participate in such a free supermarket seal action because I never get those savings cards full. Although sometimes it's tempting to be part of it, I refuse to be seduced. I think it's really a choice and that not participating is always cheaper than participating in such a saving action. Because if temptation strikes, I'll start math, and then I'll be healed pretty soon. I would often have to pay too much on products to get that 750 euro of groceries, so then such a free shopping package is no longer so free. I now mention the PLUS action but actually this applies to all supermarkets.
