The Kruger Park is an enormous and wild terrain, where animals can live free, in a natural environment. It is in South Africa, not so far from the place where I lived, Mozambique.
One year we decided to go there in a tour, with another family of four. My parents, my sister and myself in a car, the other family in another. People didn´t go in trips like these in only one car, everybody was well aware of the danger. In the case of a breakdown or other problem, it was crucial having another vehicle. Sometimes having another driver. By then there were no cell phones and we moved through dangerous, isolated places.
In the park, we could not walk. From our car, in absolute safety, we could see, we could hear, we could almost feel the African fauna. A fauna like the slender giraffes that reached higher than the trees, the hippos, the zebras and of course, lions, leopards or rhinoceros. And so much more. It was really the nature in all its diversity, in all its glory.
I think the image that stuck in my mind strongly was the calm image of the lions. I remember seeing them always lying, always peaceful, always lazy.
They really seemed harmless animals.
