Hiking in the heart of West Flanders: Heihoekwalkroute Lichtervelde
Walking... one of the best activities to move more. My favorites are the marked hiking routes because you only have to follow signs and do not have to keep a map at hand. On a sunnier winter day than today, a few weeks ago, we did the Heihoekwalkroute.
This trail starts at holiday farm Bouckenhove in Lichtervelde, but since it is a loop walk, you can actually start anywhere.
We drove to the parking lot of Huwynsbossen, along the Beverenstraat in Lichtervelde. There you have a spacious parking space. This is a relatively young forest. At the end of the 90s, the remains of the forest were taken care of and expanded.
There is already talk of Huwynsbossen in the Middle Ages. Then it was part of a vast forest, which over the years was increasingly cut down to make meadows and arable land.
Eventually only some forest remained where the soil was too wet or unsuitable to engage in agriculture.
