Teverener Heath
Walking just across the border at Landgraaf
The Teverener Heath is a nature reserve located west of the town of Geilenkirchen, Germany. It lies immediately east of the German-Dutch border against Landgraaf.“The alternation between heather, forest, lakes and peat determines the landscape mosaic of the Teverener Heath. Here in this protected nature reserve, rare plant and animal species, such as the lark and more than 40 dragonfly species, have found a home.Sheep and goats ensure the maintenance of the valuable open heath landscape. The attraction of the Teverener Heath is determined by the characteristic alternation of damp and dry, dense and open landscapes. The indoor dunes and high bog trees were declared a protected nature in 1977.This nature reserve, which is now 450 hectares, has been part of the European network “Natura 2000" since 2001, with its special biotopes.
On the Teverener Heath, man and landscape are connected by a long common history. The striking coniferous forests, the open heather plains and the lakes arose after man had deforested the area and then used it again for forestry, as a meadow for sheep and for gravel extraction.Over the years, this created a cultural landscape that also offers interesting habitats for the natural flora and fauna.Only the valuable high bog have gone their own natural path from the start.
