#witchbutter #nature
This week I came across a big dollop of witch butter in the woods.
Witch butter is a slime fungus. That is an organism that can reproduce by means of spores.
It is a separate group, which is not part of the plant or animal kingdom.
Although they are called slime fungi, they are not even fungi, fungi, or anything else.
The yellow substance, called plasmodium, moves on independently and leaves a slime trail.
The Dutch name witch butter originated because it was thought that this strange butter must have been churned by a witch.
