Growing a pineapple

Growing a pineapple plant or at least attempting to has been fun and interesting.

I am still a beginner gardener, thanks covid for the extra time on my hands this year.

So I read once that if you take the top of a pineapple and put it in water for a while it will produce roots and then you can plant them.

So I have attempted it 3 times now.

The first was actually about 2 years ago, it was growing big and strong and then my dog found it dug it out and destroyed it. Tried to save it but it didn't make it.

Then the second one, same story she dug it out but this time I managed to save if except that she destroyed a lot of the leaves so now it barely resembles a pineapple plant.

And a few weeks ago I had bought a pineapple and my daughters asked if they can also try to grow a plant, so this one currently sits in my kitchen while the roots do their thing.

Will a pineapple ever actually grow from it?? Who knows but let's try and see what comes of it.

Has anyone tried this? What was your experience?

i hve three pineaplles in my garden. and yes they eventuallt have pineapples, it takes 3-5 years before growing fruit.

I never tried, but I quess it'll work. I do however think it needs a lot of soil, so maybe take it out of the pot? If temperatures stay above 15 degrees over there...

@Encaustichris one is in the ground in the garden itself, the other little one on two of the photos I am still keeping it in water for now so that the roots can grown a bit longer. The one in the garden, is in a spot that gets semi sun and in winter in Cape... Show more

ik ben er nog nooit aan begonnen moet ik zeggen. Ik heb bepaald geen groene vingers. Maar ik vind ze echt helemaal geweldig. Leuke foto's.....

i also haven't cultivated pineapple yet but seen pineapple plants on way to grandpa. Hope it will give pineapple.

It takes a few years, but it works ! Even when you are taking it inside in winter. After you picked it out, a new one will come. (Not mine, but from someone who's living in Belgium - grown in the kitchen, near the window...)

@Naturefreak She is pushed forced her way through the gate to get into that part of the garden, but now that we have put up a higher fence it might be too strong for her to push open now
