Lasting harm from bullying

Van der meer found that in adults who were systematically bullied, permanent damage remained in the form of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome), a syndrome that also occurs among victims of hijackings, hostage situations and people from war zones. Other harm that bullying causes may include: fear of failure, mistrust of other people, depression, eating disorders, self-mutilation, not wanting to have children (the bullying could also happen to your children), relationship problems, sexual problems and even considering suicide.
Researchers at the University of Leiden concluded, after an analysis of 43 scientific articles on bullying, that children and young people who are bullied think of suicide more often than peers. Of these, 34 articles related to the relationship between being bullied and suicidal thoughts. For this study, 284,375 young people were surveyed . In addition to these 34 articles, 9 other articles were found related to bullying and attempted suicide, for which more than 70,000 young people were questioned. This research shows that there is a significant relationship between bullying and suicidal thoughts and between bullying and non-fatal attempts at suicide.

Eating Disorders

The two most common eating disorders we know are anorexia and bulimia. Both have physical symptoms disorder.

Anorexia

Individuals who are anorexic have to deal with an incessant urge to lose weight and lose weight. Anorexia mainly affects girls and young women, boys have less to deal with this eating disorder. Although that does not mean that boys can't be bothered by it.
Individuals dealing with anorexia try to ignore as much as possible the appetite and hunger that is normally present. All this in order to lose as much weight as possible. This also succeeds by eating as little as possible in combination with as much physical effort as possible.
Ultimately, the eating disorder can become so severe that the person becomes more and more isolated from others socially. This is mainly to avoid the pressure to eat, but also because of the involvement that the environment can show that requires behavior to be adjusted.

Bulimia

Unlike anorexia, people suffer from uncontrolled binge eating in bulimia. They are so ashamed of this, that they try to keep this secret from the environment in all possible ways that are possible. People affected by bulimia are extremely anxious about gaining weight. Vomiting after a binge or laxation is therefore almost a necessity for these people, not to gain weight.
But what exactly does an eating disorder mean? What are the actual symptoms of anorexia and bulimia? And what can be classified as causes? Until what point would you be able to offer support to a person who is dealing with one of these two eating disorders as a result of bullying? When to refer to more specialized help? In general, there is often enough for a person, providing the listening ear. If that proves to be insufficient, and the person withdraws from social activities, I would really consider resorting to more specialized help.

Mood disorders

If we talk about mood disorders, we are talking about diseases with a disturbance in mood. This includes well-known depression and bipolar disorder (also known as manic-depressive disorder). In this lesson, we briefly consider the mentioned mood disorders.

Depression

When a person is constantly feeling depressed and desperate, the loss comes around the corner. Thinking then no longer works like before. In the end, the body will also work less and less well as before. Very slowly, but surely, depression develops. Sometimes it is noticeable and sometimes it is not. Depression can resurface after intense experience. Think, for example, an experience where intense sadness has played out, such as saying goodbye to a loved one through death. But this does not have to be. Depression can also rise to its head without any prior cause. Nevertheless, it is good to see if something has happened before in life that may have caused the depression.

Bipolar

This disorder is also known as manic-depressive disorder. In this form, a person's mood can go in two directions. It's a bit like the saying goes: 'Jantje cries, Jantje laughs'. And that's really true. One minute, a person can be very depressed and don't think or feel anything anymore and don't want anything. While at the other time, life looks incredibly rosy.
But what does depression really mean? For example, what are symptoms or causes, and what can you offer support to a person with depression and when is it better to seek help? If you know more about depression, this can be helpful. In general, there is often enough for a person, providing the listening ear. If that proves to be insufficient, I would really consider resorting to more specialized help.

Stress disorders

Perhaps the most famous stress disorder is PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This type of stress is generally caused by a traumatic event, a large-scale calamity or an event in the private sphere.
Individuals who are affected by PTSD experience reexperiences of a particular event that they have experienced. This event has had such an impact on them that it is deeply stored in the core of the body. Whenever these persons come into a similar situation, the body becomes, as it were, heavily overloaded and collapses under the so-called danger. As a result, normal functioning is no longer possible, one actually freezes, also known as freezing.
Understanding the person dealing with PTSD is the most important. PTSD is a complex stress disorder that requires specialist help. Of course, you cannot force a person, but perhaps support them in the process and perhaps that the choice is made that the person will still look for specialist help.
I also mention this threat, because it can also play as a result of bullying. It is then important to know what PTSD is exactly, what the possible causes are and possible action options. If you have some knowledge of this and have a young person who is dealing with PTSD and does not want specialist help, you can at least indicate in a conversation what possible options are. You can then be a support for the youthful in the sense that you can think along what a step could be for help.

Substance use

In substance use, the person is primarily concerned with the fact that what is used causes a temporary change in the perception of a person's environment. Resources that are often used for this purpose include alcohol, drugs and nicotine.

Alcohol

Alcohol consumption is a drug that is legally available in the Netherlands from the age of 18. Everyone can and can drink it. This is accepted by society. The danger of this acceptance, however, is that it does not always see the transition from abuse to dependency among individuals.
People often start with one drink, purely for fun or to relax for a better night's sleep, for example. But soon one notices that this one drink is no longer satisfactory and a second drink is needed, and soon after a third and so on. Until eventually, the abuse and dependence on the alcohol has arisen without anyone having had a mind.

drugs

There are different forms of drugs. Think opiates, GHB, amphetamine, cannabis and more. You could ask something for everyone. Drugs that you can swallow, smoke, inject or sniff.
However, not without danger. The use of opiates, for example, has the risk of contracting acute poisoning, a coma and even a respiratory arrest leading to death. GHB has the danger of becoming completely unconscious, in combination with alcohol it may even be that respiratory depression or closure of the airways due to a sagging tongue. Amphetamine has the danger that one may have a heart attack or a cerebral hemorrhage. Cannabis can provoke acute psychosis in individuals.

nicotine

The use of nicotine ensures that a person becomes temporarily more alert and that one temporarily relaxes more. However, just like the other substances, the use of nicotine is not without dangers. When nicotine tobacco is burned, it becomes tar. The substance tar is what can lead to, among other things, cancer and arteriosclerosis.
I also mention this threat, because it can also play as a result of bullying. It is therefore important to know exactly what substance use means, what the possible causes are, possible hazards and what the possible action options are. If you have some knowledge of this and have a youthful who is dealing with a form of substance use and does not want specialist help, you can at least indicate in a conversation what possible possibilities are. You can then be a support for the youthful in the sense that you can think along what a step could be for help.

Suicidal Behavior and Suicide

At the moment when a person has thoughts about death and also plans to stop living, one can speak of suicidal thoughts and suicidal behavior. Only when a person actually performs an action that results in death does one speak of suicide.
Suicidal behavior and suicide is perhaps the biggest impact that can be made as a result of bullying. This is because, in the end, several victims are involved. The grief does not affect one person, but an entire environment. That is why this threat is also included.
At the moment when a juvenile is dealing with suicidal behavior and suicide, it is good to call in more specialized help anyway. There is the option to seek advice via an emergency suicide prevention number. In any case, they can give advice for basic support.
  • In the Netherlands, this is: 113 suicide prevention 0800-0113
  • In Belgium, this is: suicide line 1813
I also mention this threat, because it can also play as a result of bullying. It is then important to know exactly what suicidal behavior and suicide entails and what the possible causes are. If you have some knowledge of this, it is a little easier to explain a situation to, for example, a 113 or an 1813. Based on the information you give them, they can advise you as well as possible what you can still offer to the youthful to get them calm, or what steps you need to take otherwise.
