As a football fan, I will be the first to admit that I never gave women's football much attention. Sure I played it at school, but watching women's league competitions, or even the world cup didn't really interest me.
Then my daughter started to play it too and as her interest in the sport grew, so did my support of women's football.
I go to every match she plays, league or friendlies, I even go and watch her train and my respect for women (or in her case young ladies) playing in a sport where many still label it a "mans sport" has really grown immensely over the last 3 years.
Now men, this is not meant to offend you or put male players in a bad light. This is purely what I have witnessed over the years. Of course, this doesn't mean that every male or female player plays exactly as I say, this is just my general analysis.
1. Female players play more honestly.
For example, if they hurt another player they own up and the game goes on. I have seen on a number of occasions female players stop an attack because they realise they are offside, much to the frustration of the coach, who yells at them to play to the whistle.
2. Matches flow better
In the sense that there aren't so many disruptions in the game.
3. There are less injuries
I find that female players are not out to get the player that fouled them 5 minutes ago. Or to stop a striker from scoring at all costs even if it means injuring a player as I have seen many male players do over the years.
4. Female players rarely fake an injury
Again, the game just flows. They get fouled, get up and keep going. There is no diving and rolling around half way across the field.
5. Female players don't disrespect the ref
Every player of any sport, will at some point be upset with a decision the ref has made, as fans we sometimes see this on our screens and get upset when our teams are "done in".
My observation on this is that male players will be all over the ref swearing and pushing and shooving around him, one club in particular was known for a long time as a team that would all collectively surround the ref, ref in the middle, and argue anything they didn't agree with. When I still wrote football articles, we use to refer to this as a bullying tactic.
(There is a reason they actually do this, but I won't go into that today)
Female players on the other hand, rarely behave in this manner, they may question a decision, but again they just get on with the game.
I asked my daughter today if there was one thing I could tell Yoors in which ways female football players are better than male players, in her opinion her reply was:
"We are better because we know that on the field there is a ref who is a professional and we trust his judgement, we are better because we play the game, follow the rules and spend more time on our feet than rolling around on the field."
"What are you trying to say Makayla?"
"Well to be very honest, a lot of male players could have a future in acting one day, us girls, we stay on our feet, because that is how the game is played and won, with our feet."
